Disposable razors are quick, cheap and easy to use. I therefore wasn’t jumping on the chance to stop using them, except for the fact that they are made of plastic and can’t be recycled! The best shaving alternative seems to be a double edged (DE) safety razor, where the blades are completely metal so can be collected and recycled locally.
On my initial research I was sceptical of the DE safety razor. They all seemed so solid and heavy while the plastic ones were light weight and had a flexible head to move with the shape of my body. I also wasn’t sure about the double edge blade in terms of both safety and smoothness. Being accident prone I didn’t like the idea of having a blade each side increasing the chances of me cutting myself before a big night out! I also wanted to look the part with smooth legs from the start, and wasn’t sure that was possible with just one blade. My final pack of plastic disposable razors however came to an end and I took the plunge and bought my first DE safety razor – having discovered the same razor can be used by men and women!

Now I have to admit on my first use I did cut my left leg… but by the right leg I had the technique sorted. I found you don’t need to apply any pressure and receive a very smooth shave. The handle is light weight and the blades last a great deal longer than the plastic disposable razor would. Replacement blades are £3.50 for a pack of 5 and you need to replace a blade anywhere between 5-10 shaves. Apart from the initial upfront cost of the razor I can see myself saving money here. The shaving soap was also great to use creating an instance lather. I chose to cut my soap in half as I haven’t quite got around to buying a soap dish so I have been using glass jars as an alternative. A few weeks in and my scepticism has changed and I have been converted to the double edged safety razor.
